Hey there. I just realised we never made the changes to the character infobox we spoke about last year. Do you mind if I implement that? As a reminder: Portable version and current design - they look the same.
Hey! How's it going? Hopefully you are staying safe. Just checking in to see how the wiki is getting on and see if there is anything I can help with. Any news on that Rise of the Guardians spin-off/movie? :) --Spongebob456talk 10:49, May 17, 2020 (UTC)
Absolutely, got to take it one day at a time. Sorry to hear your hours have been cut, make sure you're keeping safe and allow yourself to do things you enjoy at these times. Please let me know if I can help with anything. --Spongebob456talk 09:04, May 18, 2020 (UTC)
Hey there! I started a new thread as the other one was getting rather long. Did you still want to implement the portable infoboxes we spoke about a while ago? It is quite a simple process and working with Fangirl111 we got them looking identical to the ones you're using now while being more suitable for mobile viewing. Please do let me know if I can help with that. :)
Hi again! I'm just dropping by to let you know of a new scheme introduced at Fandom called Editor Rewards. This is a great new scheme designed to reward editors on Fandom, with merchandise ranging from free video games, hoodies, collectibles, and more!
To find out more about the scheme, please feel free to read the Introduction to Editor Rewards blog post Fandom staff posted. Also, please do leave feedback in the comments section of that blog as staff will be able to respond quickly and answer any questions you may have.
Bar a couple of slight changes, that is near identical to your current infobox you have now. The difference with this one is that it is a Portable Infobox (PI). Have you come across those before?
As a quick summary if not, PIs are a type of infobox that display better on mobile devices for mobile readers using the mobile skin. This is very important as roughly 60% of readers view wikis from mobile devices and that is only going to increase in the future. The good thing with them is they look great on desktop too and can be made to look identical to old-style infoboxes, while maintaining the great mobile experience.
The next good thing is that they are also easier to handle. If you look here, the top code is the code you place into Template:Character and the CSS beneath it adds the styling. That should make them nicer to use. If you scroll further down that link, I posted images of what the infobox looks like as not a PI and one with what it looks like as a PI.
So really with PIs, the looks stay the same but the mobile experience improves and the editing experience should be easier also.
Well, I kept like this because I didn't know whether or not I have to change something in the coding for the infoboxes, which isn't my strong suit; I am not good at coding. Also, when it was first introduced it looked nothing like the desktop look and if they actually make look alike that's great and I could consider making it a portable one.
Yeah I understand what you mean. For a lot of communities it was tough at first, but it is rewarding once it's done. As I say, with more people using mobile devices, it's important wikis keep up with that really.
Do let us know if you want help with the coding side. I'm not an amazing coder myself. The good thing with PIs is that you can use code from other wikis as a template more easily as the code is easier to discern - for me anyway. Worth saying the CSS would apply to all infoboxes, so no need to craft the infoboxes individually.
How is the infobox I created on my test wiki? Is there anything you'd want changed with that? :)
Hey guys, sorry to butt in but I strongly suggest we wait for our Head Bureaucrat and Admin, @User:The Rush, before we make any changes to this Wiki. I also strongly believe that the community should be notified of this change first as well. With that being said, I'm actually the one who usually handles coding around here/my Wikis, and I've been thinking of PIs for a while now. I've never actually made one before, however I was planning on switching this Wiki over after a chat with the Admins and community sometime in the future. I love the PI you've suggested, but can you make the background light grey like it usually is instead of white? Also, I actually like how the template currently looks on mobile, btw.
Again, I believe we should notify Carlos and the community before making any changes.
Oof! They do make a good point and if makes it easier on mobile users to see it then why not?
So what would be the cons and pros of having it. Ember you are the code wiz. What do you think? I also wanna hear your opinion Skye.
Hi guys! Absolutely, getting the community's input is a great step, go ahead!
Fangirl1111: it's certainly possible to make it light grey and I've just made the change. Please feel free to use any of the code here and test it out here or on your own test wiki as you'd like. If you'd like me to make changes to it so you can see it on my test wiki let me know also.
Definitely talk to anyone you need to about this as, with this being a wiki, it's important the community is on board with the change. Please contact me still if you have any questions! :)
Hi! Sure, I'll make a list of the pros and cons now:
An improved look on mobile devices - the infoboxes display and flex to all kinds of devices for a better viewing experience for all
As a result, they are easier for viewers on mobile devices to read
Easy to code, with CSS accounting for styling on all PIs and the actual infobox code being simple and intuitive
With this, PIs can be styled to look identical to current infoboxes while still offering a better mobile experience
Different coding style which may take some getting used to but, as I said, it is still intuitive
Hopefully that helps!
Absolutely, feel free to announce it and get the community involved.
I made the change to the PI background, let us know what you think! What do you mean about the image background being the darker blue please? The headers are the same colour as on your current infoboxes. :)
Hi guys! How are you? Have you decided what you'd like to do regarding the above? If you'd like to get the community involved, you could create an Announcement to get the message out.
For what it's worth, as above, there would be minimal disruption and the doc for the infobox would largely remain the same. We would just be updating the code for the infoboxes and adding the CSS for the styling.
@Chris (First message) Oh wow, can you put the blue back, please? I did not expect that XD #F0F0F0 is for the white part of the background, to make it the same light grey as is currently on our infoboxes. As for the image background, what I mean is that sometimes the image takes a moment to load and you can see the background is dark blue, the same blue as the first header.
(Second message) Yes, that's what I was talking about with announcing it.
Well done! Sure, I'll put it back. As you may have noticed, I'm designing some PIs for a few wikis so I have to pick and choose haha. Would you be open to me creating the infobox in my user namespace so you can see the PI here? :)
Hi! Sorry for being late getting back to you. I've create it and you can see it in action here. It might take a while for the CSS I added here to take effect. How does that look? You are free to edit anything you like that I've created, let us know what you think! :)
Hi guys! While you're both in this thread, I just wanted to let you know that Fandom will be upgrading to a modern version of MediaWiki which could bring new extensions! More details can be found here! :)
Hi guys, how's it going? Does the infobox design look alright?
Like before, as we're all on this thread, you may have already seen it, but Fandom now has an official Discord server! You can chat about all things pop culture and ask your Fandom related questions there too. Here are the details! :)
Hey guys, sorry for the follow-up announcement so soon, but this one is relevant to this thread and has been highly requested for some time!
Introducing Special:Analytics, a new statistics tracking tool for admins on all Fandom wikis.
This feature includes some really insightful statistics that should allow you guys to inform some wiki decisions, such as:
Top viewed pages
# of page views (daily over the past 30 days)
Most visited files
Desktop vs mobile sessions
So as I mentioned above, this feature is really great as it allows you to see what areas are doing very well and how you can capitalise on them. For example, and highly relevant to this thread, the tool shows the vast majority of your wiki's views come from mobile devices (63%!). This is why implementing PIs will really help. :)
Hopefully you like this feature, it's been highly requested for some time and we would really appreciate your feedback on it. For more help with it, please feel free to ask me questions and also refer to these two super useful articles:
Hi Skye! My name's Chris, and I’m the Fandom Wiki Manager for Rise of the Guardians Wiki! I am here to help the community and be a liaison to full-time Fandom staff.
I think Rise of the Guardians truly is magical and I can't believe we haven't got a sequel yet. Has one been announced do you know? I watch the movie a lot with my family and I need to get into the books. :)
If you ever have a question or issue relating to the wiki, editing, etc., please contact me on my message wall. Thanks!
Since Carlos isn't on rn maybe you can tell him this too but I think this picture would be PERFECT for the Special:Community Page's header! I can crop it to show you exactly what I mean, but just give me a moment, then.
That may be too tall, but it can be cropped more at the bottom :d Look at the DP Wiki if you wanna see what I'm talking about btw, so yeah, plz ask Carlos too if you can/want bcuz I think it's perfect C:
Hmm, it really does NOT want to accept the re-upload of the community header =3= It won't let me pass the warning stage, even though I confirmed it. Can you manually upload it again, instead of replacing it? Here's the link.
Same thing with the Community Page Header, it keeps warning that the file is a duplicate and refuses to upload a duplicate. Ugh -.- Can you upload it, too? You can probably override the warnings and push it through, here's the link, the first image goes in there :P
It could've been my cache, I might of had to pass it first, I'm not sure. I see it! Thanks! What do you think? All of their faces are cut off now tbh, so I don't really like it as much :/ I can crop it again :d
Yep! I hope so too. I spoke to him recently and he said that is working on making a summary for the fifth book. Also, regarding the Newsfeed thing, he is having trouble with it. Anyway, I am doing pretty okay.
(Nods). Yeah, me too. Yeah, Carlos said that he tried to fix it, but couldn't figure it out. Probably, but there hasn't been much or any news of RotG. He and I talked about having some information from the book regarding Nightlight and Jack. We plan to have Nightlight's info on his page until the point he really becomes Jack Frost and put the rest of the information on Jack's page.
I understand, and I don't see it working properly on any other Wiki that's also using it, btw. There was just a new book, I think that's recent enough? :d He was also talking about potential sequels and stuff, so that could be a good thing to list. We could put his Twitter feed there, which has concept art and stuff like that. We should also make a countdown, I think :d Okay, and that sounds great, I was wondering what you two would think up for that issue :P XD Did he say anything about updating the Mod rights since the Staff decided to split it into two groups?
Okay, so the Newsfeed really needs fixing. At least one news article, but not much. Probably. Putting his Twitter feed would be great. A countdown for what? Yeah, we were trying to wrap our heads around that issue. He was confused when I tried to explain about the Mod rights.
I guess, Idk if the Staff are even thinking about that, tho :/ Agreed, we could also write our own little memos, like: "William Joyce talks about possible continuation of Rise Of The Guardians [Source on Twitter or Instagram here]"? Okay. Agreed, ask Carlos if he agrees? Idk yet, just in case so we can, I guess :P Mhm, especially since Jack's page is already really long :P Okay, if you want, you could say this: "Wikia Staff changed Moderators into Discussions Moderator and Content Moderator. Mods are only Discussions Moderators now, you have to click Content Moderator and Discussions Moderator to restore the rights back to normal."
Hey Skye, Carlos hasn't been active in a while and I don't wanna spam him with a bunch of messages. I was gonna add a bunch of the stuff I did to Jack's trivia onto William Joyce's page, but it's locked! Also, someone REALLY needs to go over W.J's instagram and add all the new sketches and info. Usually Carlos would be all over it, but he hasn't been on in a few months. Regardless, we're tardy now T~T
Yeah, he has been busy to be on Instagram too, because I messaged him about your message of the news feed, he eventually answered me that he is looking into the news feed. I will unlock Bill's page for you. As for anything new, he has been posting audio clips of his upcoming book and pictures of another book he is working on and other things. I will try to add the some of the newer posts. Carlos told me once that he will be making new pages for the new characters in upcoming books after the book is released in stores.
Oh, okay. If the News Feed isn't working or doesn't look like it's needed anymore, it could be a good idea to just delete the code but write any news ourselves so it doesn't need to be removed entirely. We could also add W.J's tweets as well, some Wikis have that, like the Danny Phantom Wiki. Okie, thanks, I'll edit it later. I'm afraid I might've been too extra on Jack's trivia though, I just don't want to cut out anything important :d Btw, since anons can't edit here anyways, is there any point to having pages locked for only auto-confirmed Users? And I saw you added the stuff from W.J's instagram, are we all caught up on that now? I know he was posting on Twitter too, so it'd probably be good to update anything on there as well. If there's anything noteworthy (I know I saw on one of his posts that Jack's hoodie's origin would be revealed in the new book) can you cover it while Carlos is busy? Or I can, I can also double check for any missing info afterwards if you do it. Do you wanna add the audio clips too? Otherwise, can you add the other info for the books, even if they aren't out yet? Okie dokie. Okay, do we wait for him to make them or do we make any that have info already released? Also, should you mention to him the Moderator updates the Staff did (Moderator being turned into Discussions Moderator and Content Moderator, where all Mods were turned into the former and the latter must be re-added) and ask him about it being added?
Yeah. Yeah, I agree. His tweets are the same as the Instagram page. No problem. That's fine. Carlos had them like that to avoid any vandalism from those anonymous users. Yes, for now. Same thing as Instagram since he was making sure that everyone from those social media aren't being left out. Yeah, I can do what I can. That's a good plan. Not sure since we don't even put videos on the pages. Other info for the books?. (Nods). I would wait for him. Okay, I will let him know.
Yeah, I'll bring that up with Carlos, since I think that'd be better than outright deleting it. Okay, but I don't think you can have his instagram, I haven't seen that, that's why I think a twitter widget would be best. Okay, so they're fine? I know, but anons are disabled, so should pages be protected against them when they can't edit it anyway? Yay! :D W.J or Carlos? Okie dokie. Okay, I'll double check those later then. We used to, and most Wikis have an automatic video playing at the top of most pages, I was actually wondering why we don't. Would we link to the videos instead, then? Or write what he says with the video's link as a ref? Yeah, like that we're supposed to learn the origin of Jack's hoodie in the new book, stuff like that. Okie dokie, maybe remind him if it's been a while so we don't get tardy again. Okie dokie.
I agree. Okay. Yes. I will keep like that anyway. W.J. (Nods). All right. Yeah, and it got distracting. The automated videos might be from possibly being a choice or created by staff? Not sure. Sure. That could work. I sent a message to him via Instagram Direct, we will see when he will respond.
Okie, good :P Yeah, I'll bring that up with Carlos when he gets back, too :P Okie dokie :P Okay, why though? In case they're allowed back and then you don't have to re-find the pages that were locked? Okay. Did it? I don't remember that :d I don't know, should we tho..? Okie dokie, you or me? (Or Carlos but he isn't on rn so..) Okay, or do we wait for the actual book so we don't have to delete it after it comes out? Okay.
(Nods). That's fine with me. Carlos kept them like that and I don't want to really mess with the protection. Yeah, some of the videos on the other wikis, weren't made by the users of those wikis. We could. You could try. If you want to wait until the book arrives, that's fine. I doubt it would be a problem if we put the videos before the book. (Nods).
Okie. Oooh, okay, I'll ask him about that too, then. It's probably what I assumed, then :d Okay, were they made by the Staff then? I guess I'll ask Carlos about those, too :d Okay, where should the video (description w/ ref, not audio) go? With the other Jack sketches? I mean, it's kinda part of development too, right? :d I don't know, what do you think? Agreed, I think so.
Yep :P Me either tbh XD >.< Oh, okay, so then we are including the actual videos? Or is it still just text? Bcuz I'm not sure how tbh cuz it's on instagram and I'm not on there. And also do we wait for the book or just add any info available?
OKIE DOKIE, I'll go back over these VERY soon and show you the stuff I wanna add to pages. For now tho, I started editing W.J's page before I did all this so gimmie a sec to publish without undoing your edits :P
